💭 What ...got you interested in the planning sector?
In truth, I wasn’t aware of planning as a profession until near the tail end of my undergrad, but the idea of helping to grow great communities and places has been with me since my days playing SimCity and creating neighborhoods out of Lego as a kid. That passion dovetailed with my education in political science and economics and my experience working for municipal government in other roles. Soon, I was flying across the country, diving headlong into a master’s program while seeking out every opportunity I could to meet and learn from leading practitioners while experiencing the job firsthand. I’ve been blessed to work with many incredible teachers, clients, and communities since then, and it’s these opportunities to learn and grow that continues to drive my interest in the field to this day.
💼Tell us about your favorite project to date and why?
One of my first projects as a professional planner involved preparing a detailed socio-demographic and economic review to inform population and employment forecasts for communities across Northern Ontario. The forecasts would then guide the development of transportation and infrastructure plans and investment decisions, with specific attention paid to the opportunities that could arise with the development of the Ring of Fire in the Far North.
✈️If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A trip to Tokyo has been on my bucket list since I learned Japanese in high school. The incredible mesh of culture, geography and technology has always fascinated me, with its fantastic mix of density and livability. As our cities face increased pressures to intensify and build upwards, I think that Tokyo, and cities like it, offer some interesting examples of how to plan and build for a range of housing and economic functions. That, and I’m a big fan of ramen and Japanese whiskeys.
