  • Collaborate with the B&A Leadership team on growth opportunities and develop a strategic growth plan.
  • Coordinate with internal and external teams, including with other sectors of CIMA+, to ensure high-quality, timely project deliverables.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in urban planning, with a strong focus on land development, policy analysis, and regulatory approvals within Ontario.
  • Bachelor’s degree in urban or regional Planning. A graduate degree and/or a combination of education and experience in real estate development or related fields is considered a strong asset.
  • Full membership or eligibility for membership in the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) and Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP).
  • Deep knowledge of the Ontario Planning Act, Provincial Policy Statement, Growth Plan, and local planning policies.
  • Proven experience leading and managing complex development applications and multi-stakeholder planning processes.
  • Strong client-facing and relationship management skills with a demonstrated ability to build and maintain partnerships.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; confident presenter in public, political, and professional settings.

Job Description

About the Opportunity

Over the past several years, B&A has established a leading urban design practice that is both distinct and complementary within Western Canada’s consulting landscape. What started as a small, hands-on studio has evolved into a recognized design leader, capable of delivering creative, practical, and integrated design solutions across scales – from community and neighbourhood planning to site-specific design, redevelopment, and public realm projects.

Our studio works collaboratively with B&A’s planning, engagement, visualization, and GIS teams, while also taking on standalone design commissions that showcase our creativity, technical rigour, and passion for place. As part of our continued growth, we are seeking an experienced Senior Urban Designer to join our Calgary-based studio.

This is an exciting opportunity for a design professional who thrives on collaboration, creativity, and the ability to bring ideas to life – someone who can lead complex projects, inspire clients, mentor emerging designers, and contribute meaningfully to the evolution of the practice.

What You’ll Do

As a Senior Urban Designer, you’ll play a key role in shaping the next phase of B&A’s design studio. Working closely with our interdisciplinary teams and clients, you’ll:

  • Lead the design and delivery of projects ranging from new communities, redevelopment plans, and mixed-use sites to master plans and urban realm design.
  • Manage multidisciplinary teams, ensuring projects are delivered with creativity, quality, and care – on time, on budget, and aligned with client objectives.
  • Develop and nurture relationships with clients, municipalities, developers, and other professionals, helping grow our portfolio of work through reputation and trust.
  • Mentor and support junior staff, fostering an environment of learning, collaboration, and design excellence.
  • Champion design innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity in every project.
  • Contribute to business development efforts, including proposals, competitions, and studio promotion initiatives.
  • Collaborate across B&A and CIMA+, connecting design with engineering, infrastructure, and environmental disciplines to deliver truly integrated solutions.

Qualifications

What You Bring

  • A degree in Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field.
  • Professional accreditation (or eligibility) with the Alberta Association of Architects (AAA) or Alberta Association of Landscape Architects (AALA) is strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of 8–12 years of professional experience in urban design, architecture, or landscape architecture, including experience leading projects and managing teams.
  • A strong understanding of urban design principles, planning frameworks, and development processes in Alberta and Western Canada.
  • Exceptional conceptual and graphic design skills, with proficiency in tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, SketchUp, GIS, Revit, and/or other design software.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills — both visual and verbal — with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and compellingly to diverse audiences.
  • A collaborative mindset, entrepreneurial spirit, and passion for creating vibrant, sustainable, and enduring places.

Who You Are

You are a passionate designer who thrives in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment. You balance creativity with pragmatism and have a deep understanding of how thoughtful design can shape better communities. You are energized by collaboration with clients, colleagues, and communities, and you’re equally comfortable sketching a concept, leading a workshop, or presenting to a city council.

You see mentorship as a key part of your leadership. You’re motivated to help grow and strengthen the studio’s next generation of designers, while continuing to challenge yourself and the team to elevate the design conversation.

Why Join B&A Studios

B&A Studios is one of Western Canada’s leading planning, design, and engagement consultancies, now part of the CIMA+ family – one of Canada’s largest privately-owned engineering and consulting firms.
