Master Plan & Land Use
The Symons Valley Centre project was undertaken by Facility Management at City of Calgary along with the B&A Planning Group project team as part of the Integrated Civic Facility Planning (ICFP) program to do more coordinated planning for the development of civic facilities with City service lines, civic partners and the private sector.
Feasibility Study (2017)
On behalf of the City, B&A worked with a variety of City service lines, civic partners, government services, non-profit services and private developers to look for new opportunities and new ways of delivering facilities through partnerships. Primary site stakeholders were identified including Calgary Transit, the Calgary Public Library, Calgary Recreation (Arts & Culture), Calgary Affordable Housing, Alberta Health Services, the Calgary Catholic School District and the YWCA. A market study was undertaken to determine additional private uses on site. B&A worked with the stakeholders to identify space needs and opportunities for achieving integrated development at the Symons Valley Centre site.
Master Plan and Land Use/Outline Plan (2018)
On behalf of the City, B&A continued to develop a phased master plan for the 7 acre parcel in the developing NW area of Symons Valley along with supporting information for a concurrent land use amendment and outline plan. The project team developed a functional program and schematic design with the Phase 1a stakeholders for a Phase 1a multi-service civic facility to further refine space needs, identify potential shared spaces and establish a preferred schematic building design. The project team held several successful public engagement events including two open houses to present and gain feedback on the plan, potential services appropriate for the civic facilities, and expected activities and usage of outdoor common areas.
